As a bride-to-be, you face many choices, from deciding the shade of blue for your bridesmaids’ dresses to the type and size of linens for your tables, and even their folding style. Among these choices, booking your vendors, including a skilled hair and makeup team, is one of the most crucial decisions for your wedding. As an experienced wedding professional, I’ve witnessed numerous teams of vendors, especially proficient hair and makeup teams, working harmoniously together to bring to life the vision you have for your perfect day.

On Wedding Day
I have also seen some disastrous and miscommunicated mess that has created a stressful day. Wedding days are usually smooth and wonderful, and they’re one of the most memorable days in the life of the bride and groom. It is difficult to choose your vendors. You will need to research, call and email many people in order find the best team for your special day. You don’t need me to tell you what vendor for chairs you should use or what you should avoid in the catering contract. I can only tell you how to choose the right hair and makeup team for your big day. I’ve learned some things as a professional wedding stylist who has worked on more than 400 weddings and for award-winning teams in Florida. Here are some of the most common questions that I am asked when searching for a makeup and hair team.
What Are The Best Teams Near Me?
Over the years, I’ve found that the best places to find vendors are the ones you can see. Michele Renee the Studio has been rated as one of the best sites to find vendors. It will show you the top ten vendors in your locality, along with their reviews and portfolios. Teams pay to appear on websites like this, so be sure to read the reviews and check out their website. The Knot is a great tool for brides to find vendors.
Instagram is one of the most convenient and accessible ways to discover artists. Instagram is my favorite because it allows you to see the work of an artist in a simple way. You can also make a decision based on aesthetics. You can find a super glam makeup artist by searching for makeup artists in your area and looking at their work. What is their style? Do you think it’s too much or not enough? Be cautious, however, on Instagram. Not everyone is a professional and could cause you headaches in the future.
How Do I Book An Artist Once I Have Found One?
Before you contact a prospective hair and makeup team, here are a few things to consider. Check the DBPR of your state to see if they are licensed.
Verify that they offer a valid website and booking procedure. You will be asked to fill out a form by most companies. You should include the following information when contacting an artist or company: what time is your ceremony, how many people will need services, when your photographer will arrive, where you’ll be getting ready and if you would like a trial of hair and makeup.

The Artist Can Accommodate
After you’ve confirmed that the artist can accommodate the number of services you require and is available for your wedding, here are some things you should do to complete the booking process. You should ALWAYS be asked to pay a deposit. This can range from 15%-50%. It ensures your date will be secured and that they have it in their books. You should also always ensure that you have an official contract signed. Make sure you read it carefully and ask any questions you may have. The best advice I can give is to keep a record of all communications and details.
Verify that each vendor has a way for you to contact them. Here is my contact information. This is how clients can contact me. I will get all of the information I need in order to book your wedding.
When Booking, What Are The Red Flags You Should Look Out For?
You need to be aware of red flags, just as you would in a bad marriage. You must know the right questions to ask, and the information you should provide. A legally binding contract is one of the BIGGEST red flags. This is a story I hear over and over again from weddings who contact me at the last minute. I’m told “I found her on Facebook and she said that she had me booked, but she canceled one week before my wedding.” Or, “she ghosted me.” I understand that social media is how many people do business, and it’s okay. Be sure to have a legal agreement. If something goes wrong, the artist will be responsible for it and you’ll get your money.
Really Talented at Makeup
Everyone has someone in their family or friends who is “really talented at makeup.” As wonderful as it is, you still need to hire a professional. You’re paying thousands of dollars for video and pictures. It’s a different experience to do your own makeup versus having someone else do it. We have the knowledge and experience you can’t get by doing your makeup yourself. Spend the extra money and hire a professional to avoid this. A big red flag would be if your artist does not know how to clean and sanitize properly. It is not acceptable to use a product application directly from the container. You must ALWAYS be able to see that they are cleaning their applicators and using disposables. Look for professionals who are clean, licensed and insured.
The Green Flags Are Now Flying.
Let’s start with the positives. Things that will make your mind light up as a Christmas tree. They are quick communicators. Some artists have agencies, and others do everything alone. Quick communication to me is a response within 24 hours. You will quickly discover that quick communication isn’t as common as it seems when you are planning a wedding.
If you feel that your first conversation with your team is not like a light police interrogation, it’s likely they do not have the necessary information.
The third step is to talk you through the service and set expectations. It is important to have expectations so you know what you’re paying for.
The Fourth Is Transparency In Pricing
I’m a firm believer that it should be all laid out. There are no hidden fees, and there is no “well that will be added later.” If this happens, you must pay 10 dollars to this person. You need to be aware of all possible fees. As an example, companies usually offer packages or a la carte. If you look at the price list, does it include all possible fees, such as an early morning charge, a fee for long hair, or do they indicate if airbrush makeup or traditional makeup are more or less? Ask them if there are any additional fees that can be charged to your services. This will help you avoid a nasty surprise when you’re enjoying drinks at the beach on your honeymoon. Asking questions and being informed is key to making a successful reservation.
It’s Easy To Book Hair And Make-Up
When I talk to brides, it’s never clear whether hair and makeup will be the first thing they do or the last. Last but not least, I’ll leave you with some advice. Never book hair or makeup for less than 3 to 6 months in advance. As brides book earlier and earlier due to the pandemic, your dream artist’s Saturday could be booked a year in advance and you will have to look for someone else. Don’t wait if you are looking for someone specific or a good artist. You should find an experienced and reputable artist whose work you enjoy and whose vibe you also like. The artist will be with you for the majority of the day. Your vibe with them and their team is second only to the quality of the work. Enjoy the process. This is a special day that you will never forget.
